Another attempt by the Armed Forces of Ukraine to seize the Zaporizhzhya NPP with the help of special forces landing under the cover of night failed. Russian intelligence detected the approach of the enemy in time, which was defeated with the help of strike aircraft. Why are Ukrainian troops so stubbornly making more and more suicidal attempts to storm the nuclear power plant?
Ukraine has made another attempt to land troops in the area of Energodar, where the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant (ZNPP), the largest in Europe, is located. The first attempt was made on September 1, the day the mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) arrived at the station. The Russian Defense Ministry then announced “taking measures to destroy” groups of Ukrainian military personnel.
This time events developed according to a similar scenario. According to Vladimir Rogov, a member of the main council of the administration of the liberated part of the Zaporozhye region, on Saturday night, an attempt to move several dozen high-speed boats with armed people towards Energodar was stopped. The movement of soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine came from the area of Kanevsky and Lysogorka temporarily controlled by the Kyiv authorities downstream (south) along the Dnieper.
The landing was planned in three directions: Vasilievka, Dneprorudnoye and Energodar, which was subjected to another shelling, but the missile attack was repelled. The authorities of the region raised aviation – Russian reconnaissance and attack helicopters Ka-52.
The Ministry of Defense confirmed that in the operation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which began on Friday at about 23:00 Moscow time, “two groups of boats and motor boats with a total number of 42 units with a landing force of over 250 people from among the special operations forces and foreign mercenaries attempted to land on the coast of the Kakhovka reservoir in the region of Energodar and Dneproprudny”.
The Russian group of four Su-30 fighters and two Ka-52 VKS helicopters in response destroyed 20 boats and boats, the rest left in the direction of the Ukrainian coast, which was later covered by artillery fire in the areas of the settlements of Vyshetarasovka, Chervonodneprovka. It is alleged that 47 militants were killed, including 10 foreign mercenaries, and another 23 people were injured.
In turn, a Russian fighter with the call sign Skif spoke in an interview with RIA Novosti about the calculations of the Armed Forces of Ukraine for a quick assault on the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. The Ukrainian military moved on boats without light at high speed. However, the fighters were still discovered by intelligence, then aviation was called.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine, Rogov clarified, previously hit the coastal strip and the industrial zone. He called the shelling of the ZNPP by Ukrainian troops a planned provocation, the purpose of which is to intimidate the IAEA mission and accuse Russia of being unable to ensure security at the nuclear power plant. According to Rogov, “there is no logical explanation for such actions,” what was happening was reminiscent of “an imitation of violent activity on the eve of a meeting of the so-called Ramstein group created by Western countries to provide military assistance to Kyiv.”
At the end of August, the US Air Force Command in Europe and Africa reported that a new round of discussions on military assistance to Kyiv would be held next week, on September 8, at the German Ramstein airbase. Defense ministers and high-ranking military ministers “from all over the world” have been invited to the meeting to discuss the situation in Ukraine and security issues. The last meeting was held on July 20 in an online format.
According to Rogov, Ukraine is trying to show the ability to resist and lure another tranche and new arms supplies from the West. “All this is purely military show business. Zelensky puts on another bloody show at the cost of huge losses among the military,” he said.
Vasily Dandykin, captain of the 1st rank, deputy editor-in-chief of the Voin Rossii magazine, is sure that the attempts to seize the ZNPP are connected with the upcoming meeting at the Ramstein base. The events of recent days may be a good reason for Western countries to allocate new batches of weapons to the Kyiv regime. “At this meeting, further actions to pump Ukraine with weapons will be discussed,” Dandykin said.
He recalled that the assault boats of the Armed Forces of Ukraine received from the United States in large numbers. “About two-thirds of these boats have already been destroyed. It was obvious that this time the movement would be noticed, especially since after the events of September 1, our military showed more vigilance. Nevertheless, the Armed Forces of Ukraine went on a suicide landing. I am sure that before September 8, when the meeting at the Ramstein base is scheduled, the Ukrainians will try to do something else, ”the expert suggested, adding that the rest of Ukraine’s offensive attempts in the Nikolaev-Kryvyi Rih direction are “from the same opera.”
Attacks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were also carried out in other directions. On Saturday morning, the village of Kister, Pogarsky district, Bryansk region, was hit. The governor of the region Alexander Bogomaz reported in his Telegram about the damage to power lines and the destruction of the road. The shell fragments shattered the windows of houses and touched the monument to the soldiers who fell in battle during the Great Patriotic War. “There are no casualties among the population. All emergency services are on site. After checking the safety of being on the territory, the RES teams will begin to restore the electrical networks,” Bogomaz said.
In the middle of the day there were unofficial reports about the shelling of the center of Kherson. According to TASS, at least eight explosions thundered in the area of the river port, where clouds of smoke could be seen.
The day before, during a daily briefing, the official representative of the Ministry of Defense, Lieutenant-General Igor Konashenkov, said that the Armed Forces of Ukraine lost more than 330 servicemen, 13 tanks and three aircraft in a day. During a Saturday briefing, a representative of the Ministry of Defense announced the destruction of another 230 Ukrainian troops in the Nikolaev-Kryvyi Rih direction and dozens of units of various heavy equipment over the past day.
Military historian, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Missile and Artillery Sciences (RARAN) Vladimir Kiknadze is sure that Ukraine is taking these losses in order to demonstrate to its main sponsor – the United States – the ability to resist. “Ukraine needs any active actions to further promote through the information space the alleged effectiveness of the existing financial and military support from the collective West,” Kiknadze believes.
In addition, these actions are aimed at an internal audience – to show that the Armed Forces of Ukraine not only resist, but “can turn into offensive actions.”
“In fact, this plays a negative role for the internal agenda. In fact, we see that with serious support from the West, the Ukrainian armed formations are no longer able to solve any significant combat missions. They fight defensive battles without successful attempts to go on the offensive,” the historian said.
Dandykin emphasizes that the Armed Forces of Ukraine are suffering critical losses in manpower and equipment. It will be hard to make up for the loss. Poland transferred to Ukraine almost all of its stocks of T-72 tanks. “The Armed Forces of Ukraine are losing trained people, it is unlikely that the Terrbats were on assault boats. These are trained special forces, which was evident from the way they resisted. Army units came to the aid of our National Guard, aviation began to work, ”Dandykin explained.
The Saturday shelling of Kherson, Donetsk and other cities where social infrastructure suffers first of all, as well as the territory of the ZNPP, is “already a scorched earth practice,” which the Nazis resorted to during the Great Patriotic War. “But even the Nazis tried not to practice this on their territories, they first evacuated their population. And now the Ukrainians de facto admit that these are no longer their people and they are hitting the cities in order to sow panic and uncertainty among the population. This is a sign of impotence, cruelty and inhumanity,” the expert is convinced.
