Zelensky asked the prime minister of Georgia to let doctors and relatives visit Saakashvili

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said that in a telephone conversation he asked the Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili to allow his mother, relatives and Ukrainian doctors to see the ex-president of the country, Mikhail Saakashvili. The politician wrote about this on Twitter.

Prior to that, the Special Penitentiary Service of Georgia published a video of Saakashvili’s transfer from prison to the Gldani prison hospital. The recording shows that law enforcement officers took the arrested person out of the car by force, after which he insulted them and damaged medical equipment.

“The President highlighted the inadmissibility of using disproportionate coercive measures against a citizen of Ukraine,” Zelensky’s office said following his conversation with Garibashvili.

In addition, it is reported that Zelensky discussed with the Georgian Prime Minister the provision of Saakashvili’s rights.

The former president of Georgia was detained at home on October 1. Earlier in the country, he was convicted in absentia in the cases of the murder of banker Sandro Girgvliani and the beating of deputy Valery Gelashvili. In the first case, he was given three years in prison, in the second – six. He also became involved in the cases of dispersal of the opposition rally on November 7, 2007, the pogrom of the Imedi TV company and the embezzlement of funds from the state budget. These cases are considered by the courts.

After the arrest, Saakashvili went on a hunger strike. Earlier this week, a council of doctors announced the need for his hospitalization in a multidisciplinary clinic. The Special Penitentiary Service of Georgia announced his transfer to the Gldani prison hospital. Yesterday it became known that he decided to stop starving.

Rallies in support of the politician are being held in Tbilisi.
