The head of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said on the ICTV channel that he would consider the possibility of exchanging the leader of the HLE, Viktor Medvedchuk, if he had Russian citizenship.
In response to a question from a TV journalist, Zelensky recalled that “Medvedchuk is a citizen of Ukraine and Ukrainian legislation applies to him.” However, the president admitted that in case of confirmation of the Russian citizenship of the politician, such an exchange would be quite likely.
“After this confirmation, we would be happy to … consider the possibility of exchanging Mr. Medvedchuk for real heroes and citizens of Ukraine who are not in Ukraine,” Zelensky said.
Earlier, the Security Service of Ukraine brought new charges against Medvedchuk. He is suspected of treason and aiding terrorism.
According to law enforcement officials, in 2014, the politician organized coal supplies from the self-proclaimed republics of Donbass, acting in collusion with the country’s top leadership, to undermine the energy independence of the state. The SBU believes that Viktor Medvedchuk created artificial obstacles to the import of coal from South Africa.
As a result, the court in Kiev sent the head of the political council of the Opposition Platform – For Life party under 24-hour house arrest.
