The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, said that Russia is ready to enter into contact with Washington for an early extension of the Treaty on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms (START), writes TASS.
According to her, Moscow welcomes Washington’s intention to extend the treaty for five years. Zakharova stressed that Russia has consistently advocated and is in favor of making such a decision.
We will remind, earlier the press secretary of the White House Jen Psaki said that the United States intends to offer Russia an extension of START for another five years. In turn, the Pentagon noted that this decision serves the interests of ensuring the defense of the United States.
The Kremlin said that Russia welcomes the political will of the United States to extend the START Treaty, but should study the proposals of the American side. In turn, the head of the international committee of the Federation Council, Konstantin Kosachev, noted that the US proposal would be great news if “it is not accompanied by any additional conditions.”
