You can not be heard! Why is hearing loss and how to restore it?

Hearing loss is a rather unpleasant phenomenon. At the same time, people often underestimate it and even ignore it to the best of their ability, although such a defect significantly reduces the quality of life. And often he does indicate quite serious problems.

Most often, hearing problems are caused by sulfur plug, which must be carefully removed by a doctor so that you can hear well again. Also, the problem can develop if a foreign body gets into the ear. This, for example, often happens to children when they put small parts into their ears during the game. Here again, it is enough to remove the source of the problem, and hearing will be restored.

About what non-obvious problems can cause deterioration in the quality of hearing, told otorhinolaryngologist of the highest category, Ph.D. Vladimir Zaitsev

“There are two mechanisms for hearing loss. One – by the type of sound behavior, that is, the behavior of a sound wave for some reason is disrupted or completely stops. The second is a violation of the type of sound perception. This is when a sound wave just ideally reaches out of the air through the ear canal, through the eardrum, the auditory bone chain and enters the inner ear, but there is no perception, ”the ENT doctor notes.

Violation of the sound conduction mechanism

There are several reasons for problems with sound wave conduction.

Lack of auricle

So, for example, as the doctor notes, hearing loss is possible against the background of the absence of the auricle. “In the case when an ordinary shell should have formed, but it is either underdeveloped in utero or absent at all, hearing impairment will be noted. Moreover, this situation happens quite often, ”says the ENT doctor. Correction in such a situation is usually performed surgically: hearing aids are used.

Osteoma of the external auditory canal

Also, the reason for hearing loss may lie in the untimely completed processes of growing up. “Looking at a person’s ear, it is not always possible to notice that something is wrong with it. And inside the external auditory canal there is one of the ossification points. By the age of 18, all ossification points should freeze near the skull, the skull stops developing. And if ossification has not occurred in the ear canal, and the point has not frozen, then the bone part continues to grow. And the so-called osteoma of the ear canal develops, ”says Vladimir Zaitsev. It is also called osteophyte. Moreover, such a growth has no sensitivity, which is why a person simply does not notice it. But the doctor, looking into the ear canal, can see a spherical formation.

“This is not an oncology, but a growth. And he is able to reduce hearing greatly. If it completely interferes with hearing, it is removed surgically, ”says Vladimir Zaitsev.

Perforation of the tympanic membrane

Another cause of hearing impairment is perforation of the eardrum. When, for example, an adult or a child has a very sore ear, a high fever, a serious deterioration in health, and against this background, an ear breaks out, not everyone goes to the doctor. As a rule, says Vladimir Zaitsev, after the eardrum has broken through, the situation begins to improve: the temperature drops, the pain goes away, the person can even recover. “And the perforation does not close. And this becomes the cause of life-long hearing loss. Therefore, even if the pus came out of the ear and felt better, you still need to go to the doctor, ”says Vladimir Zaitsev.

Ear bone problem

In the ear there is an articulation of the smallest joints: the hammer, incus and stapes. These are the smallest bones in the body, says the otorhinolaryngologist. “If a problem develops in this joint, then the tiny joints that connect these bones freeze, stick together, lose mobility, as a result of which the sound wave cannot be transmitted. This disease is called otosclerosis, ”says the otorhinolaryngologist.

The doctor notes that the composer Beethoven was a vivid example of a person with such a diagnosis. Moreover, most often this pathology occurs in women. “The problem is actually treatable. The main thing is that the correct diagnosis is made. It is also necessary for the patient to decide on the operation, which is necessary here. The prosthesis is placed locally, which will transmit a sound wave to the inner ear, ”says Vladimir Zaitsev.

Runny nose

“There are also colds that lead to ear congestion. Therefore, when the nose is stuffed up, snot flows, you should not try to endure it and try to be cured by just markings. Here the risk of throwing mucus into the ear with a sharp blowing of the nose will increase. An inflammation of the auditory tube, called eustacheitis, will develop, ”says Vladimir Zaytsev. And eustachitis, as the specialist emphasizes, leads to the appearance of symptoms such as stunnedness, hearing loss.

Violations by the type of sound perception

In this case, the problem does not lie in the ENT organs and often requires the involvement of a neurologist’s consultation.

Hair cell death

“There are auditory nerve hair cells in the inner ear. If they died from birth or are congenital underdeveloped, there may be problems, ”says the otorhinolaryngologist. The doctor also emphasizes that the life cycle of these hairs can be influenced by ototoxic drugs, which, for example, were taken by a pregnant woman (or with which a child was treated in case of some severe illness). For the auditory nerve, such drugs are highly undesirable. “The hair cells of the ear canal do not regenerate. Therefore, only hearing aids will help here: a doctor can offer a patient a hearing aid, a prosthesis, ”says Vladimir Zaitsev. Also, ENT notes that in this case, hearing can also be stimulated through transcutaneous microcurrent stimulation of the hair nerve.

Brain problems

Also, hearing loss can cause problems with the structures of the brain. In this case, the problem needs to be treated by a neurologist. At risk, as the otorhinolaryngologist notes, people with meteosensitivity: they, along with weakness and dizziness, may develop a feeling of hearing loss. Also, those who suffer from surges in blood pressure also suffer: with increased blood vessels are tense and everything around is heard worse, with a lower one there is a feeling of stunnedness. Vegeto-vascular dystonia is also the reason for the deterioration of the ability to hear well.

“Hearing impairments can be difficult. Sometimes it is impossible to return it, so do not delay the visit to the doctor. Otherwise, there is a growing risk that time will be lost, ”says the ENT doctor.

It is also worth adjusting the daily routine: getting enough sleep, avoiding stress. This will help you maintain good hearing for longer.
