Why the sewer is clogged and how to solve this problemWhy the sewer is clogged and how to solve this problem

Sewerage is used daily and a lot of waste is dumped through it. Over time, you may notice that the water began to leave more slowly, and at one point it stopped washing off altogether. What causes this unpleasant phenomenon and how does the sewer cleaning take place?

Causes of sewer blockage

Drainage pipes are intended for biological waste only. But during operation, various contaminants get there, which are layered on the walls, reducing the clearance of the pipes. The following substances are the most dangerous for sewers:

  • Fat. It inevitably gets into the pipes when you wash the dishes. Remains of food and fat settle on the walls of the sewer, and the growths become larger and larger.
  • Hair. Once in the pipes, the hair twists into balls and clogs the sewerage very tightly. They also trap other contaminants such as grease and dirt, eventually forming a large plug.
  • Small and large debris. Especially dangerous for drainage systems are feminine hygiene items (pads, tampons), wet wipes, tea leaves, ground coffee, large pieces of food, especially bones. In some places, the sewer is not even designed for toilet paper.

These are operational causes of clogged pipes. Sewers can also clog faster if mistakes were made during installation. This is a failure to comply with the slope of the system, an incorrectly selected pipe diameter, an incorrectly installed drain system. Over time, sewer pipes can break or sag, which also causes poor drainage.

The walls of cast-iron and steel pipes are very quickly overgrown with a mud layer, so such a system clogs faster. Professional flushing solves the problem, but the best way to get rid of it is to change the pipes to metal-plastic ones.

Ways to eliminate blockage

Flushing the sewer with hot water will cope with a small problem. To heighten the effect, coarse table salt can be poured into all plums, and after 5 minutes open a tap with hot water and wait another 5 minutes.

In the kitchen and bathroom, you can use chemicals such as Mole, which dissolve hair and grease. Pour them into the drain, pour a mug of hot water, wait 15-20 minutes, and then rinse with plenty of water. For best results, you can use a plunger to push through any remaining debris.

In more severe cases, it is better to use the services of a plumber. With the help of tools, they will mechanically clean the sewers and flush the pipes. In this case, there will be no risk that you will flood your neighbors or drains will overflow.

The best way to deal with sewer blockages is prevention. Install food and grease traps in the kitchen and bathroom, and agree with the household that garbage should only be thrown into the bucket, and not into the toilet.
