The World Health Organization (WHO) does not rule out an epidemic of tuberculosis in Europe by the end of the year, said Melita Vuinovich, a representative of the organization in Russia.
“We are very afraid that by the end of the year we will see an increase in the number of cases and a new epidemic of tuberculosis that must be prevented,” she said at a press conference at TASS.
According to Vujnovic, in order to prevent the epidemic, European countries must respond to this challenge not only at the level of the health care system, but also at the political level.
A representative of the WHO said that in the first six months of this year, fewer cases of tuberculosis were detected in Europe than in the same period last year, but this does not mean a decrease in the number of patients, since the diagnostic system was paralyzed by the coronavirus pandemic. Vujnovic explained that if it is not yet possible to identify the disease in 15% of cases, then the increase in patients may be 30%.
