What is the scandal with the wiretapping of Alexander Vucic’s conversations?

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic came under wiretapping. In March head of the Serbian Ministry of Internal Affairs Aleksandr Vulin stated that the head of state and his family members were illegally tapped.

According to Vulin, the intelligence officers involved in the scandal tapped thousands of people, explaining this by “security interests due to extremism and terrorism.” According to him, the president was tapped by the Interior Ministry officers who might have been in cahoots with the mafia; all suspects were interrogated, and the materials and recordings of telephone conversations were transferred to the prosecutor’s office. Currently, the incident is being investigated as a serious criminal offense under the article “Attempt to overthrow the constitutional order.”

Who besides the president got wiretapped?

The Serbian Interior Minister said that 1572 cases of illegal wiretapping of the conversations of Aleksandar Vucic and his family have been proven so far. In addition to the president, his brother was intercepted Andrey, son Daniel and father Angelko… The head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs did not rule out that there could be more such cases.

As Aleksandr Vucic said in an interview with the Serbian TV channel Happy, he knew about what was happening “for a year and five months already”. According to him, the wiretapping was partly carried out by law enforcement agencies, partly by government agencies and partly by foreign intelligence services. The President called the incident “an attempted coup.”

What was the motive for the wiretapping?

The head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs noted that there is nothing illegal or reprehensible in the content of the President’s wiretapped conversations. The department did not name any specific motives for the wiretapping, nor who was the customer. According to Minister of Defense of Serbia Nebojsa Stefanovic, an operation of this magnitude would have been impossible without the support “from the very top of the state.” Aleksandr Vučić also claims that some of the officials helped the criminals to commit illegal actions or did not interfere with their implementation. In the course of the investigation by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, employees of the department were tested on a lie detector.

According to the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the reason for the wiretapping was Vucic’s struggle with criminals. The media have repeatedly reported that the president is under threat after representatives of the Montenegrin mafia clans were detained in Serbia. Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic believes that the customers, using wiretapping, wanted to “physically or otherwise eliminate” the president in order to destabilize the situation in the country. In February 2021, the head of the Serbian Criminal Police Department, Bogdan Pusic, announced that the mafia was preparing an assassination attempt on Vucic. It was supposed to take place on January 27, on the day of the opening ceremony of the monument. Stefan Nemana

The Serbian opposition is putting forward its own version of the scandal. According to Deputy Chairman of the Party of Freedom and Truth Marinika Tepich, the police in 2017-2019 legally wiretapped extremists and members of criminal clans, and the president and his family members who communicated with them, simply “got under the wire.”

“We are talking about the connections of the top power with the mafia, which the government created, went out, financed and defended in order to use it as a club against political opponents and independent media,” Tepic said.
