According to Rosstat, from 2009 to 2019, the number of smokers in Russia decreased from 39.4 to 27.3%, but 45% of men and 15% of women still smoke.
According to statistics, out of 2500 deaths per 100 thousand of the population, 500 were directly related to tobacco smoking. The biggest danger associated with smoking is cancer. Smoking increases the risk of not only cancer of the organs of the bronchopulmonary system, but also of many others: stomach, intestines, bladder, etc. Stroke, cataracts, pneumonia, arthritis and erectile dysfunction are also associated with a bad habit (23% of which is caused only by an addiction to tobacco ).
Comments oncologist, deputy director for medical work, Research Institute of Clinical Oncology, N.N. Blokhin Konstantin Laktionov:
– The main risk factor for lung cancer, from which one person dies every 10 minutes in the country, is tobacco smoke. Of the 7000 substances that are released during the combustion of tobacco, at least 69 are carcinogens. While nicotine itself is not a carcinogen, it is an addictive plant alkaloid. Smoking not only increases the risk of cancer, but also significantly reduces the effectiveness of all types of cancer treatments. The best choice for the patient is to completely quit smoking or at least switch to electronic tobacco heating systems.
