High heels were designed for riders to keep their feet from slipping out of the stirrups. However, later this accessory was adopted by women, and then different types of heels, ranging from pointed toes to low thin heels and platforms, took the main place in the women’s wardrobe.

Wearing heels makes women more stylish, taller and more confident. High rise completes the body, and heels are the best way to do this, especially since they can be combined with different outfits. However, no matter how beautiful and stylish they may seem, they are known to be the cause of some diseases.

With a normal gait, put the heel first, and then the rest of the leg, and then repeat the same. Most of the body weight is initially transferred to the heels. However, wearing heels brings a change to this pattern. Heels transfer more weight to the front of the foot, and this effect is enhanced when high heels are worn.

Consequently, the load on the front of the leg increases. This posture also pushes the abdomen forward and pushes the pelvis inward, changing the distribution of weight on the spine and pressure on the back. Returning home, we change shoes and after wearing heels, we begin to feel pain due to sensitive nerve endings.

Some of the most common dangers that high heels can cause are:

  • Pain and stress on the joints and ankles: The heel does not reduce the impact, so the knees face hard consequences, leading to joint pain and arthritis.
  • Tight-fitting shoes can cause blisters: The constant pressure created by rubbing the skin against tight-fitting shoes causes the skin to harden.
  • Lower back pain due to weight shift: Heels cause the pelvis to move forward when walking, and this in turn puts pressure on the lower back, causing constant pain.
  • Achilles tendons become weak: Prolonged wearing of heels shortens the muscles and tendons around the ankle, and then they begin to hurt badly.
  • The nerves of the legs are damaged and the calf muscles become weak
  • Wearing normal shoes distributes body weight between the ball of the foot and the heel. However, heels also create an imbalance due to pressure on the ankles. The chances of you spraining your ankle increase.
  • Ingrown toenails are the result of wearing pointed shoes. In most cases, the thumb and little finger are affected, as they take all the pressure on themselves. As a result, we have ingrown nails – and this is extremely painful.

You can wear heels with a little care and it will help you not only look great but be healthy as well.

  1. Try to opt for platforms, as they not only look beautiful, but also reduce pressure on the fingertips.
  2. You can also splurge on a well-known brand that is comfortable and has special heel support.
  3. Try to limit the amount of time you wear heels, and make it a habit not to wear them while walking or dancing.
  4. You can also opt for ballet shoes that have stickers or lace, or a bow that will decorate shoes of different designs and colors.
  5. Add orthopedic insoles for heel support. The gel pads also act as good heel or foot support.
  6. Stretch your leg and roll a golf or tennis ball with it to relax your muscles and tendons. This will relax your legs after a hard day in heels.
