Violin in the operating room. What for?

- summer Dagmar Turner plays in the orchestra . In the 2013 year, she had an attack and was diagnosed with a slowly growing tumor in the brain. Doctors, following the development of the disease, decided on surgical intervention. The operation was carried out at King’s College Hospital in London under the supervision of Professor Keyoumars Ashkan.

For Turner, “the thought of losing the ability to play was heartbreaking.” Doctors took into account the needs of the patient and paid special attention to ensure that the parts of the brain that are responsible for the coordination of movements are not affected. But the process had to be controlled. During the operation, Dagmar Turner was taken out of anesthesia in order to play the violin.

“We perform about 400 of resections annually, often patients are awakened for language tests, but for the first time my patient played the instrument, ”said Professor Ashkan. The operation was successful - after three days the patient was discharged from the hospital.

“We managed to remove more than 90 percent of the tumor, including all areas with suspected aggressive activity, while fully preserving the function of the hands. ”

Concerts on the operating table of neurosurgeons do not happen too often but this case is far from the first - see “During the operation on the brain of the patient, they asked to play the guitar.”
