US wants to discuss boycott of the Olympics in China

The United States wanted to discuss a boycott of the upcoming Winter Olympics in China with its foreign allies and partners. This was announced by the head of the press service of the US State Department, Ned Price, quoted by TASS.

During the briefing, he was asked whether Washington is considering the idea of ​​a “joint boycott” of the Olympics in China.

“We, of course, want to discuss this. And we, of course, understand that a coordinated approach will respond not only to our [американским] interests, but also the interests of our allies and partners, ”Price replied.

According to him, this issue is on the agenda, the United States will conduct “close consultations” with allies on this matter. He also said that Beijing is responsible for various serious human rights violations, in particular in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR).

The Winter Olympics will be held in Beijing from 4 to 20 February 2022.

On April 6, North Korea refused to participate in the Olympics, which will be held this summer in Tokyo, due to the situation with the coronavirus. The decision was made during the general meeting of the North Korean Olympic Committee, which took place on March 25 in Pyongyang.

In early March, South Korean President Moon Jae Inu said the Tokyo Olympics would provide an opportunity for the resumption of talks between the US and North Korea. The South Korean leader also called the upcoming summer Olympics a chance for dialogue between the two Koreas, as well as between Seoul and Tokyo.
