The Pentagon will train the Armed Forces of Ukraine in handling Western weapons systems, which the United States will supply to Kiev as part of military assistance. In particular, he will teach the Ukrainian military to shoot from American howitzers. This was stated by the official representative of the department John Kirby.
According to him, the program of short-term courses has already been developed. And “within the next few days” the first group of Ukrainian military personnel will be able to start the training process, which will be carried out according to the “train the trainees” scheme. That is, it is assumed that US instructors will train “a small number of Ukrainians”, who will then return to Ukraine to pass on the knowledge gained to other military personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Where exactly the States will deploy training camps for this purpose, Kirby did not say. But he noted that the training will be conducted “outside of Ukraine.” However, it is not difficult to assume that NATO training grounds in Eastern Europe could become this place. In particular, in Poland, Romania or the Baltic countries.
In any case, not so long ago the commander of the Lithuanian army Valdemaras Rupshis explicitly stated that trainings would be organized in Lithuania to train the Ukrainian military to work with Western-style weapons.
Recall that last week the President of the United States Joe Biden announced the delivery to Ukraine of a large consignment of weapons and military equipment for another 800 million dollars. It, among other things, will include 11 Mi-17 helicopters, 200 M113 armored personnel carriers, eighteen 155-mm howitzers and 40 thousand artillery shells, as well as 300 Switchblade kamikaze drones (“Flash Knife”).
Before that, it is worth saying that the Americans did not transfer any artillery systems to Kiev. As well as the Switchblade drones, designed mainly to destroy armored targets. True, with regard to the latter, the Pentagon previously reported on a group of VSE soldiers who received special training in the United States on their use. And recently, these “knives” were seen in the Donbass.
Apparently, American howitzers have not yet reached Ukraine. But the United States is clearly raising the stakes by continuing to supply the Kiev regime with more and more different types of weapons. And in fact, they themselves have become a party to the conflict. Just what will it fundamentally change in terms of the combat readiness of the Armed Forces of Ukraine?
To comment on the situation, “SP” asked military expert, director of the Museum of Air Defense Forces Yuri Knutov:
– As far as we know, they promise 155 mm howitzers. But it is unlikely that the Americans will be generous with the M777, which are considered the best in their class. Especially for its modernized version.
Most likely, they will transfer the M109 Paladin of the first modification, which entered the troops back in 1963. These are self-propelled artillery mounts, but they are available in the “transportable” version. They will probably put them on. Because today this technique is already considered obsolete, which must be disposed of. That is why the United States is now training Ukrainian crews outside of Ukraine, so that later they will use these weapons in combat, respectively.
Chief EU diplomat Josep Borrell stated that there is no peaceful solution to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. As the American general said Mark MilleyChairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, it should drag on for several years. BUT Zelensky generally speaks of a decade.
Actually, this is the main goal of the United States, according to which such a huge amount of weapons is being transferred to Ukraine. And it’s not just the Americans who do it. Armament to the “square” is currently coming from 25 countries, including 21 NATO countries.
All this, of course, is planned to be used against the Russian army. But our army successfully counteracts such deliveries. We just destroyed another logistics center in the Lviv region. Just with American weapons.
But it must be taken into account that Washington’s plans to pump Ukraine with various types of weapons are huge. Moreover, in Brussels Ursula von der Leyen hysteria, so that all EU countries urgently began to supply weapons to the Kiev regime. This means that our military space forces, our Iskander complexes and Kalibr missiles will, of course, have more work to do.
“SP”: – By the way, do we use howitzers?
– Of course we use it. “Coalition-SV” is our newest self-propelled artillery mount. It hits 80 km, at a speed of more than nine shells per minute. But the 122 and 152 mm Msta-S and Akatsiya are still used more widely. And they are used both for counter-battery combat and for suppressing enemy positions.
As for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, today we have already destroyed about 85-90% of Ukrainian military aircraft, about 85-90% of medium-range anti-aircraft missile systems. Ukraine does not have a long range at all, but they still have a short range – they have been supplied with quite a lot of Stingers. Of the 2,500 armored vehicles, more than 2,200 were destroyed. Therefore, Zelensky is shouting to the whole world to send tanks, planes
But what the problem is with artillery and multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS). A good half of the Armed Forces of Ukraine still remained in the ranks. And that is why so much damage is done by artillery. They have supplied quite a lot of counter-battery radar stations, and these stations help them a lot in the conduct of hostilities.
So the artillery struggle today came out on top. This is the MLRS, from which they fire at our border villages – on April 19 they again fired at the territory of the Belgorod region. And howitzers, which along the entire line of contact are pouring shells on the territory of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics.
“SP”: – So, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have howitzers?
– Basically, these are the same as ours – the Soviet “Acacia” and 122 mm D-300. By the way, Denmark supplied them to Ukraine. At one time, these howitzers were in service with the GDR army, and after the unification of Germany, they were transferred to Denmark, which now, with the permission of Berlin, transferred them to Ukraine. So for now, the Armed Forces of Ukraine use everything Soviet.
American howitzers are just not better than ours, rather, in many respects ours are superior to them. But they also have their own merits. Let’s say they have a towed howitzer that can be deployed by helicopter on an external sling.
But most importantly, the presence of GPS satellite navigation systems and information transmission. They allow you to control equipment in automatic mode. That is, the car itself turns around, opens fire and immediately changes positions. Because, as a rule, the enemy’s counter-battery station detects and transmits coordinates within three, maximum, five minutes. During this time, the calculation needs to curl up and change position.
