US congressman urged to punish Russia for Europe’s gas problems

Michael McCall, a senior Republican on the Foreign Relations Committee of the US House of Representatives, has called for Russia to be punished. He said that it was she who was behind the gas problems in Europe.

McCall recalled that German Chancellor Angela Merkel and US President Joe Biden reduced pressure on Nord Stream 2, but in return promised to respond if Russia “makes an attempt to use energy as a weapon.” This was reported by the press service of the Republicans of the House Affairs Committee.

According to the Republican, the US administration should punish Russia, namely, to impose sanctions against Nord Stream 2. McCall is confident that Moscow is deliberately manipulating the European gas market, taking advantage of the serious energy crisis to speed up the certification of the pipeline.

Recall that Russian President Vladimir Putin supported the initiative of Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak to increase the volume of gas sales on the electronic trading exchange of St. Petersburg. However, the head of state emphasized that this should be done through the exchange, and not through the spot market. Moreover, these actions should not negatively affect the interests of Russia.

As a result, the price of gas in Europe fluctuated and stopped at the level of 1.2 thousand dollars per thousand cubic meters at the end of the day. On the eve of the same, another historical maximum of 1.92 thousand dollars for the same volume was reached.
