US Ambassador to Russia John Sullivan said he was flying home for consultations, but would return to Moscow in the coming weeks.
The diplomat said that he intends to discuss with his new colleagues in the White House the state of relations between the United States and the Russian Federation.
The embassy clarified that Sullivan will leave for Washington this week, reports TASS.
The fact that the US ambassador will arrive in the American capital this week was reported earlier today by the Western media.
In mid-April, Washington imposed new sanctions on a number of Russian individuals and legal entities, and also announced the expulsion of 10 diplomats.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has promised that Moscow will mirror the response to the expulsion of employees of Russian diplomatic structures. Aide to the President of the Russian Federation Yuri Ushakov, in turn, recommended that the American ambassador go to Washington for consultations.
