US allies in Europe and the Pacific are influencing the White House to prevent the US from adopting the principle of non-use of nuclear weapons first, as, in their opinion, this could “give courage” to Russia, reports the Financial Times, citing sources.
It is clarified that the administration of US President Joe Biden is currently analyzing the American policy regarding the use of nuclear weapons.
The United States sent out a questionnaire to allies to find out how they feel about changes in their nuclear policy. According to the sources of the publication, the majority negatively assessed any changes in this area. Among them are France, Germany, Australia and others. Allies fear that Biden plans to move towards a “single target” principle, whereby the United States will only be able to use nuclear weapons under specific circumstances. According to some European representatives, this will be “a great gift for Russia and China.”
Earlier, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, criticized the statements of German Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer on the use of nuclear weapons against Russia. The latter announced the need “to make it clear to Moscow that Western countries are ready to use such means as well.” After that, the RF Ministry of Defense summoned the German military attaché and handed him a note of protest.
