UN Secretary-General Guterres urged the world to prepare for the next pandemic

The world must start preparing for the next pandemic. This was stated by UN Secretary General António Guterres during a speech at the World Economic Forum (WEF), RIA Novosti reports.

Guterres said there is a need to invest in monitoring, early detection of the disease and rapid response plans. He stressed that the fight against COVID-19 must be fair and on an equal footing.

The Secretary General, referring to the strategy previously published by the World Health Organization (WHO), said that within its framework it was planned to vaccinate 40% of the world’s population by the end of 2021 and 70% by mid-2022. However, according to Guterres, humanity is far from fulfilling this task. At the same time, he stressed that the vaccination rate in high-income countries is seven times higher than in African countries.

“We need justice in the distribution of vaccines, right now,” he said.

The UN representative believes that all pharmaceutical companies should show solidarity with developing countries through the exchange of licenses and technologies. According to Guterres, this will allow finding a solution to the issue of the pandemic.

Earlier, Swedish scientists announced the discovery of a new mutation of the omicron strain. It was named BA.2.
