UN Secretary General: COP26 failed to achieve a number of climate targets

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said that a number of climate targets at the Glasgow conference were not achieved.

“Our fragile planet is in the balance. We are still on the verge of a climate catastrophe, ”RIA Novosti quoted Guterres as saying on the results of COP26.

The UN Secretary General called for “accelerating” in order to prevent global warming more than 1.5 degrees, and announced the need to stop subsidizing fossil fuels.

Guterres recalled the need to phase out coal and set a carbon price, and called for a $ 100 billion commitment to support developing countries in the fight against the climate crisis.

“At this conference, we did not achieve these goals,” the secretary general stated.

At the same time, Guterres noted that the inhabitants of the Earth have the tools to achieve progress. Rapid and sustained reductions in greenhouse gas emissions should be an absolute priority this decade, he said. Other challenges are tackling deforestation, reducing methane emissions and mobilizing private finance for carbon neutrality.

Earlier, Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome of the 26th UN Conference on Climate Change (COP26). “The real work continues outside of these rooms,” she said.

Prior to this, the activist called world leaders pretenders and said that they are not able to solve the problem of climate change.
