UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres compared the present with 1945, RIA Novosti reports.
During a speech at an event timed to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the first meeting of the UN General Assembly, he noted that the world today is experiencing a moment like in 1945. “But this is not 1945. Today’s war is being waged against a microscopic virus, ”Guterres said, adding that tomorrow there could be a war against terrorists in cyberspace, and humanity is still losing a long battle against climate change.
The UN Secretary General stressed that today the conflict is no longer a matter of only military and economic power. He stressed the importance of broadening the understanding of international cooperation. “We must turn our global system into a global partnership,” Guterres said.
Guterres said earlier that the level of extreme poverty in 2020 increased worldwide for the first time in 22 years. He stressed that in order to overcome this situation, a more ambitious approach must be found, based on two principles from the Sustainable Development Goals.
