Ukraine starts building a “large fleet”

Today, on September 8, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy put into effect a secret decision of the National Security and Defense Council on the development of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The corresponding decree was published on the website of the President’s Office.

The document enforces the NSDC decision of August 20, 2021 on the development of the Armed Forces of the Armed Forces until 2031. At the same time, there is no text of the decision itself – it is indicated that it is secret.

According to Zelensky’s decree, control over the implementation of the decision is entrusted to NSDC Secretary Alexei Danilov.

In August, during an interview with Ukrainian journalists from Crimea, Zelensky said that by 2035 it is planned to implement a large program for the construction of the navy.

“As for our navy, we now have three stages. Until 2035 – construction of a large fleet. We will see the first stage in reality – it will definitely be until 2024. The second stage is being completed until 2030. The third – until 2035, ”the president said.

At a briefing on the results of the NSDC meeting on August 20, Danilov said that the issues of the development of missile weapons and the Naval Forces of Ukraine until 2031 were considered “secretly”.

“There were very heated discussions. The only thing I can say is that by 2031 we have to spend more than 200 billion hryvnia on this program (missile armament – ed.). We cannot wait from our partners when they will or will not provide us with weapons. Our task is to make weapons of our own production, ”Danilov said.

He also said that the NSDC is asking the Verkhovna Rada and the Cabinet of Ministers for an additional 960 million hryvnia in 2021 for the purchase of technical equipment necessary for the Ukrainian Navy. According to him, until 2031 in Ukraine “everything that concerns our fleet will be built.”
