After the terrorist attacks in Transnistria, seven Western countries called on their citizens to immediately leave the republic. Among them are the USA, Canada, Bulgaria, France, Israel, Great Britain and Germany. They made a similar appeal on the eve of the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine.

But in Bucharest, for some reason, they are not worried. “At the level of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the government, we analyzed the indicators … We did not recommend and do not recommend that Romanian citizens leave the Republic of Moldova,” said the Prime Minister of Romania Nicolae Chuca.

This is thought provoking. Romanian citizens have nothing to fear only if Romanian troops enter Moldova. About the possible preparation by the Western countries of the military Anschluss of Transnistria through the territory of Moldova, the other day wrote “SP”.

The readiness to seize Transnistria, if Chisinau asks for it, was also announced by officials of the Kyiv regime. According to some reports, they can do without Moldova. Zelenskyallegedly, has already enlisted the support of Washington, that Chisinau “will not notice” the aggression.

Igor Strelkov believes that the Romanian-Ukrainian coalition is preparing for a “cleansing” of Transnistria. At the same time, the commander of the Central Military District Rustam Minnekaev said that “the Russian army must establish full control over the south of Ukraine and go to Transnistria.”

According to the ethnographer, historian, representative of the Moldovan community in Russia Evgenia Nikolaevain the event of the destruction of the current status quo, with the support of Moscow, Great Transnistria may arise, which will press Ukraine out.

– It is necessary to know that Moldovans are now settled in the territories of several states: in Transnistria and in the adjacent territories of the former Ukrainian SSR (in Chernivtsi, Vinnitsa and Odessa regions, called Transnistria in a geographical sense), in the Republic of Moldova itself, as well as in Zaprutskaya Moldavia ( Upper and Lower) – in the east of Romania.

SP: How did it happen?

– During the settlement of Slavic tribes in Europe, most of the territory of present-day Romania was captured by the Avars. They settled north of the Carpathians and later became Hungarians. Slavs settled south of the Carpathians. Also on this territory lived Volokhi – the Romanized local Illyrian and Thracian population. They contacted, assimilated with the Bulgarians, East Slavic tribes: streets, Tivertsy, Bolokhovtsy, White Croats etc. As a result, a kind of bridging between the Slavs, Avars and Volokhi was established in the region.

During the Mongol invasion, all state formations were devastated, the elite was slaughtered, trampled, taken away in full, and the local population remained to live on the same lands. They needed at least some public education. This Slavic, Ruthenian population, which lived between the rivers Siret and Prut, Prut and Dniester, Dniester and Southern Bug, eventually settled certain groups of the Romance-speaking elite – those very Volokhi. Over time, the Slavic substrate was ground and the Moldavian ethnos was formed. At the same time, the religion remained Orthodox.

“SP”: – Divided people …

“It’s essentially the same population. Even at the end of the 19th century, the Moldovans in the western Zaprut Moldavia remembered everything about themselves. But with the beginning of industrialization, it became difficult to survive in Romania without the Romanian language. As a result, the Moldavian identity in the Zaprut Moldavia was absorbed by Romania, the language was romanized, the spelling was translated from Cyrillic to Latin.

But the interfluve of the Prut and Dniester – the territory of present-day Moldova, is much less Romanized. Including due to the long stay in the Russian Empire. Now there are about 60 percent of Moldovans in Moldova, the rest are Russians, Ukrainians, Ruthenians, Bulgarians, Gagauz, Greeks. The north of Moldova is actually a Rusyn region, the Great Russians understand their language more clearly than Ukrainian.

In Transnistria, the picture is fundamentally different. There has never been a state with a Romanesque component. There are about a third of Moldovans there, the rest are ethnic groups, as in Moldova. The population has always been bilingual – they spoke Rusyn and Moldavian. In general, the Slavic component prevails in the east, it decreases towards the west. This is confirmed by toponyms and hydronyms.

Immediately after the formation of the USSR, the Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic appeared with its capital in Balta, a city in the Odessa region. This city itself is Russian-speaking, but there were many Moldovan villages around it. There was an “appendix” connecting Balta with the current Transnistria. In 1940, it was united with interfluve Moldavia and the Moldavian SSR arose.

These three historical parts of Moldova with approximately the same population had completely different fates. There were three possible ways: unification with the Romanesque world (Zaprut Moldavia), a balance between West and East (present-day Moldavia) and the eastern vector – Transnistria. This choice has been made many times throughout history.

“SP”: – It seems that now is another such moment. How could this end?

– With the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, a lot can change dramatically. If there is the will of Moscow, the formation of Great Transnistria is possible, including the lands of the Northern Black Sea region – part of the Odessa, Vinnitsa regions, up to the Southern Bug, where it will border on Novorossia. Pridnestrovians deserve access to the sea.

SP: What are the benefits?

“It’s a matter of administration. Local staff is always better. There is not a single normal factory in Odessa. This is a transshipment base on trade routes, a port, nothing more. But in Transnistria, the opposite is true. Everything was preserved there, not a single plant was destroyed. They both worked in 1985 and still work. And even new production facilities appeared, despite the blockade by Moldova and Ukraine.

For example, the Moldavian Metallurgical Plant in Rybnitsa is the most powerful enterprise in the entire region. If raw materials were also imported there legally (now scrap metal has to be smuggled in), it would have no competitors at all, neither in Romania, nor in Moldova, nor in southern Ukraine. Yes, and Russia has been investing in Pridnestrovie all these years very well.

Great Pridnestrovie, having straightened up with the end of the blockade by Moldova and Ukraine, connected to the markets of Russia, to its resources, with access to the sea, having connected with the logistics capabilities of Odessa and the Danube ports, having acquired a sanatorium infrastructure, is able to become a regional economic leader.

“SP”: – A powerful political idea …

– Transnistria is tied to Odessa, and Odessa is tied to Transnistria. The local population, who knows the region well, constantly traveled back and forth. It is motivated, pro-Russian, and therefore giving it “feeding” the Odessa region of the former Ukraine is a good way out of the situation so as not to bring the Vikings and not to annoy anyone.

This political idea will be met with a bang in Pridnestrovie. When the special operation began, they immediately began to prepare to break through the corridor. For them, it is a vital necessity. It is possible that this will be discussed with representatives of Russia.
