Tokayev spoke about the conversation with Putin after refusing to recognize the DPR and LPR

President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, during a conversation with the host of the panel session of the Qatar Economic Forum, said that he was in close relations with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. He stressed that they were not spoiled by the position of Nur-Sultan on the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR).

Tokayev stressed that Vladimir Putin remains a reliable ally of Kazakhstan. He also noted that the Russian leader was not disappointed by his words about the non-recognition of the DPR and LPR by Kazakhstan.

Moreover, according to Tokayev, after this statement, he and Putin had a meeting.

“No, we had a very good meeting right after the forum. We talked about specific issues relating to bilateral relations between Kazakhstan and Russia. He was very calm and self-confident,” the President of the Republic said.

Speaking about the resolution of the crisis in Ukraine, Tokayev noted that the non-nuclear status of this country and its refusal to join any military organizations could lead to the end of the conflict.

He also told what kind of agreement he would regard as an acceptable solution to the current situation around Ukraine.

“If Ukraine is a non-nuclear state and does not join any military organizations,” Tokayev said.

He noted that he had in mind the agreement that was almost reached in Istanbul. According to him, he then spoke on the phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin and told him that this would be a good agreement.

Tokayev added that such a status for Ukraine would be acceptable to Russia and the entire international community.

Last week, Tokayev, during a speech on the stage of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), in the presence of Putin, said that Kazakhstan would not recognize the DPR and LPR. At the same time, he called these republics “quasi-state” territories.

Tokayev explained his position by the fact that if the principle of the right of nations to self-determination is followed, more than five hundred states can be formed on the planet, which, in his opinion, will lead to chaos.
