President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev signed a decree on the appointment of his assistant Yerlan Karin as the new state secretary, RIA Novosti reports.
The document also says that the former Secretary of State Krymbek Kusherbayev is relieved of this post.
Earlier, Tokayev accepted the resignation of the government and temporarily entrusted the duties of the prime minister of the republic to Alikhan Smailov.
As a reminder, protests have continued in Kazakhstan since January 2 amid rising gas prices. Tokayev introduced a state of emergency and a curfew in Almaty and Mangistau oblast until January 19.
