Tikhanovskaya said during her speech that her team “is working to bring justice back to Belarus.” Supporters of the leader of the Belarusian opposition also continue to put pressure on the government after the incident with the Ryanair plane.
At the conference, the activist asked the “democratic countries” to influence official Minsk in various ways. For example, Tikhanovskaya is sure that Belarus “should be deprived of the right to vote in ICAO, Interpol and other international organizations.”
“I call on democratic countries to continue to support the International Platform for Belarus, to promote cases of universal jurisdiction, to start using international conventions to file complaints against the regime with international bodies, to provide funding for the work of the OHCHR (Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights) expert group to investigate the human rights situation in Belarus, ”she said.
Recall that the presidential elections were held in Belarus on August 9, 2020. Their winner was Alexander Lukashenko, who has headed the country since 1994. More than 80% of voters voted for the current president. The second place was taken by Svetlana Tikhanovskaya with 10.12%. She did not recognize the results of her will and left the country. Soon after the end of the election campaign, mass protests began in the country.
