It is still difficult to assess the level of pathogenicity and effectiveness of testing methods or vaccines against a new strain of coronavirus, which was previously discovered in Japan, but it is already known that it has not made the infection more aggressive. This was stated by the head of the World Health Organization Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, writes RIA Novosti.
The WHO Director General noted that the more COVID-19 spreads, the higher the chances that new variants will appear. This, in turn, can lead to an increase in morbidity and hospitalizations, which will complicate the work of medical institutions. Gebreyesus urged to wear masks and maintain social distance in this regard.
The fact that a new mutation of the coronavirus was identified in Japan became known the day before. It differs from the strains that are spreading in the UK and South Africa, although it is partially similar to them.
Recall that the “British” strain of coronavirus, identified in mid-December, is more infectious than the original, although not as much as scientists initially thought.
In Russia, one case of this type of covid has already been recorded. It was discovered at the end of the year on a man who had returned from the UK. The head of Rospotrebnadzor, Anna Popova, clarified that Russian vaccines “absolutely definitely” protect against the new COVID-19 strain.
