The White House admitted the possibility of disconnecting Russia from SWIFT

The US authorities do not rule out any options for action in relation to Russia, in particular, the possibility of disconnecting Russian banks from the SWIFT system. This was stated in an interview with TASS by a representative of the National Security Council of the White House.

“No option is ruled out. We continue to consult very closely with our European colleagues about the serious consequences for Russia in the event of its further invasion of Ukraine,” the source said.

Earlier, the German newspaper Handelsblatt reported that Brussels and Washington allegedly stopped considering the option of disconnecting the Russian side from the SWIFT international banking system as a way to tighten possible sanctions.

According to the publication, the parties fear that this step will harm the international financial system and push Russia to create a global alternative payment system.

It is worth recalling that the Russian authorities have repeatedly stated that they are not afraid of the threat of disconnection from SWIFT. In Russia today there is an alternative system for the transmission of financial messages, 38 participants from nine countries have already connected to it.
