The West began to prepare Ukraine for “zrada”

In the West, voices are being heard more and more loudly about the inevitability of the defeat of Ukraine and the need for the Kyiv authorities to make concessions to Russia. While these statements are heard at the level of the expert community, they also reflect the mood in many ruling circles, political scientists believe. Why have politicians and analysts in the US and Europe changed their rhetoric on Ukraine, and what does this mean for Moscow and Kyiv?

In the United States, the voices of opponents of military assistance to Ukraine and, in general, the financial involvement of the American side in the conflict are becoming louder. According to Washington Post columnist David Ignatius, US President Joe Biden has already had to contend with panic among European allies who seek to end the crisis in Ukraine at any cost.

The successes of the Russian troops on the battlefield led to this situation, which also caused concern to the US president. The fact that the Russian army may win and soon occupy the entire Donbass was also written by the German edition Der Spiegel, citing data from Germany’s foreign intelligence service (BND).

The United States in the current situation around Ukraine should stop providing it with financial assistance and supplying weapons, political scientist Ross Douthet confirmed in an article in The New York Times. The author pointed out that Washington should reconsider its strategy and choose a more reasonable path. In his opinion, in the near future the situation in Ukraine may go into a pause stage.

“In this case, our plan cannot be to write endless checks and at the same time modestly tiptoe around the Ukrainians and let them dictate what our weapons are used for,” Douthet said.

A much sharper judgment was made by the political consultant of the State Department and the Pentagon, Edward Luttwak – in an interview with the German publication Die Welt, he said that holding referendums in Donetsk and Lugansk could end the Ukrainian crisis.

“Kyiv cannot refuse people a choice. This is the only way out of the conflict. Defeating Russia is something from the realm of fantasy, ”RIA Novosti quotes him. At the same time, the expert stressed that the referenda should be held with the participation of independent observers.

American Thinker columnist Frank Howard backed the idea that the United States should put strong pressure on Zelensky to agree to a settlement and allow Russian-speaking areas in southern and eastern Ukraine to secede and remain under Russian control.

According to the author of the article, with the best outcome of events, Ukraine, following the results of future negotiations, will remain neutral in the geopolitical conflict between the West and Moscow. Such a move would protect Russia’s national interests.

Against this background, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the panic of Europe due to the crisis with Ukrainian migrants, the flow of which to the EU has increased greatly after the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine. He also stated the destruction of the security system created by the West.

Hungarian Parliament Speaker Laszlo Kever, in an interview with HirTV, said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky suffers from mental problems and condemned him for his boorish attitude towards European leaders, for demands and threats for the sake of arms supplies.

The latest Western statements on Ukraine cannot be considered inevitable plans, but they are clearly indicators of sentiment in Washington and Brussels, said Fyodor Lukyanov, head of the Council on Foreign and Defense Policy, scientific director of the Valdai Discussion Club. “The idea of a referendum in Donbass has been discussed since 2014, now it has been raised again, because politicians do not know how to get out of the Ukrainian situation. The weakness of the referendum is that it is difficult to create criteria for its legitimacy that would suit everyone. Therefore, this is not a way to resolve the conflict, but a sign that the West has begun to think about the changes in the situation after the end of hostilities,” he said.

The further rhetoric of the United States, and hence Kyiv, will depend entirely on their military successes or failures directly in the zone of the special operation of the Russian Federation, the analyst specified. “Now both sides proceed from the fact that the issue can be resolved by military means, therefore, until the active phase of the confrontation ends, negotiations will not begin. At the same time, inflation in the United States, as well as the fact that the increasing involvement of the American side in the conflict is not included in the plans of the White House, makes Washington think about giving the problem some contours, and this is manifested in the media, as well as in the statements of politicians and experts. “, – said the interlocutor.

In addition, ordinary Americans are also losing interest in Ukraine, the analyst noted. “Criticism of American support for Kyiv is also used by the Republican Party, which has actually launched a campaign before the Senate elections. The Republicans are pushing the White House, and that’s a winning thing for them against the Democrats. So, probably, US assistance to Ukraine will either be reduced or transferred to those forms that will not allow saying that Biden feeds foreign citizens instead of his own,” the political scientist added.

“Recently, David Goldman, the most systemic aggressive conservative, said: “Shame on the United States, because we could peacefully divide Ukraine, and now we will share the ruins.” This statement goes right in line with the recent words of Kissinger, the American media, publicists, and political scientists. In general, two weeks ago, I began to notice that the “hawks” in the United States began to pull up, because all these rearguard battles create unnecessary unrest in the Western community. In addition, the United States does not really need constant involvement in the affairs of Europe, so Biden resubordinated Kyiv to Boris Johnson, ”said Dmitry Drobnitsky, an Americanist political scientist. This, according to him, is indicated, among other things, by the increasing cases of outright rudeness of Ukrainian politicians towards EU leaders.

“The reason for this change in rhetoric in the American public field is not that Ukraine is losing to Russia in a military confrontation – this is not news to anyone, but that the American economic anti-Russian blitzkrieg did not achieve its goals – to significantly worsen the position of Russia. In addition, Washington is waging an economic war with Russia at a different pace, namely, at a pace imposed by Moscow. And American political forces, pushed aside from power, began to use this, for example, the Clinton clan, which gained a second wind, as well as the Obama clan. Their henchmen have begun to criticize the current administration in public space,” the analyst explained.

However, he added, the main line of Moscow during the special operation should remain the same, despite the West splitting “along the line of Ukraine” – the further liberation of the territories and the creation of a ruble pricing zone there. “Moreover, the “zrada” itself did not begin now, and one cannot even say that it ever began at all – Ukraine was never needed by the United States. But ordinary residents did not understand this, although suspicions that something is wrong are, of course, already emerging. In any case, after such statements, the level of expectations from the West is significantly reduced among the inhabitants of Ukraine. When will they understand the real state of things? When their territories will be liberated and withdrawn from the Western information space. At the same time, the United States itself did not plan to give hints to Ukrainians about future betrayal – it would be too subtle for the circus, ”the interlocutor emphasized.

Luttwak’s words about the referendum are a positive signal for Russia, it shows that part of the Western elite is tired of the Ukrainian crisis and is ready to make compromises, American political scientist Malek Dudakov believes. “The more successful things are for Russia at the front, the further the RF Armed Forces advance in the ongoing battle for Donbass, the weaker the positions of the Ukrainian side will be and the more statements like Luttwak’s words we will hear from Western politicians and the expert community,” he explained.

According to the expert, Moscow hopes that reason will prevail, and the West will officially offer to stop hostilities and sit down at the negotiating table as soon as possible. “Probably, this will be done when the Russian military comes to the borders of the people’s republics. It is obvious that now the State Department is preparing the ground for just such a scenario.

“You do not advance further – and we are ready to record the results of future referendums in the DPR and LPR, if they are held under the supervision of international experts,” the analyst believes.

However, it is possible that the West will offer to start a dialogue when the Russian army reaches the Dnieper (former Dnepropetrovsk – approx. VIEW), the source added. “Another thing is whether we need to compromise now? Or the military-political leadership of the Russian Federation decides to liberate other territories of Ukraine and only then sit down at the table with the best cards. The question is open,” added the political scientist.

As for the issues at the referendum, the West, according to Dudakov, will not agree to the proposal to join the Donbass to Russia, but will approve the granting of a very wide autonomy to the republics within Ukraine.
