The universities commented on the proposal for the upper level of tuition fees

The universities spoke about the initiative of the State Duma deputies to set the upper level of tuition fees not higher than eight living wages, writes Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

Each year, the Ministry of Education and Science determines correcting coefficients for the existing methodology for calculating the cost of education, while universities are not allowed to set the amount of tuition fees below their costs, otherwise it will affect the quality of education.

“It is necessary to consider this topic in the system, in close connection with the rest of the economic aspects of the life of the university,” commented the rector of RosNOU, chairman of the Association of non-state universities of Russia Vladimir Zernov. – Of course, decisions in the interests of citizens should be considered, but they should not be to the detriment of the interests of universities. If universities reduce their costs, their development will stop, and there will again be an outflow of personnel, as was the case in the early 1990s. Alas, nothing positive will come of it. “

“First of all, it is important to note that the cost of training cannot be lower than the level that the state allocates for training in a particular area of training. Secondly, universities, with the exception of the top ones, are not interested in raising prices, since there is competition between educational institutions, ”explained Vladimir Timonin, First Vice-Rector of the Russian University of Transport. – Many universities, on the contrary, even lower the price at the expense of funds from income-generating activities in order to attract students and increase the contingent. Therefore, the initiative concerns exclusively “top” universities with high tuition fees. “

Earlier, the Ministry of Education and Science reported that more than half of university students are girls. In total, in the 2020-2021 academic year, 1.09 million people studied at higher educational institutions on a budgetary basis.

It also became known that students from five Moscow universities were among the best programmers in the world.
