The United States said that the destroyer Chafee did not violate international law

The destroyer USS Chafee acted in accordance with international law and custom, according to a statement issued by the United States Pacific Fleet following the incident with a US warship in the Sea of Japan.

“The statement of the Russian side regarding the interaction of the two ships of the naval forces does not correspond to reality. The interaction was safe and professional, ”the US Navy said in a statement.

It is noted that the United States “will continue to fly and swim where international law allows.” In addition, the US military said Chafee was conducting routine operations in international waters.

In the Russian Federation, it is believed that on October 15, in the area of the Peter the Great Gulf, the American destroyer Chafee tried to violate the Russian maritime border in the Sea of Japan. The anti-submarine ship “Admiral Tributs” did not allow violations of the state border. Against the background of the incident, the Russian Ministry of Defense called in the US military attaché.
