The UN states that the work on the constitution of Syria has reached a dead end

UN Secretary General’s special envoy Geir Pedersen said that work on the Syrian constitution has reached a dead end, Interfax reports.

He expressed disappointment with the progress of the negotiations of the Syrian constitutional committee.

“We have just completed the fifth meeting of the Syrian Constitution Drafting Committee. Before starting this meeting, I highlighted a few points that we should have achieved, but I’m afraid we have not been able to achieve them. The reason for this, I believe, is that we do not have a clear understanding of how to move forward in the work of the committee, ”he said.

Pedersen did not specify when the next meeting of the constitutional committee will take place.

Earlier, the co-chairman of the Syrian government in the Syrian Constitutional Committee, Ahmed Kuzbari, said that the principles of the integrity and sovereignty of Syria should be enshrined in the constitution. This is what the Constitutional Committee will work on.

He noted that direct or indirect external interference in the country’s internal affairs is unacceptable, and only Syrians have the right to “choose the social, economic and political system” of Syria.
