The Prosecutor General’s Office of Belarus announced that it had sent a request to Riga to extradite Valery Tsepkalo, who in 2020 tried to participate in the presidential elections, but was forced to leave the country.
At home, they want to bring the politician to criminal responsibility – he is charged with three episodes of receiving a bribe on an especially large scale (under part 3 of article 430 of the Criminal Code). This was reported on the agency’s website.
The department also reminds that between the Republic of Belarus and the Republic of Latvia there is an agreement on legal assistance and legal relations in civil, family and criminal cases dated February 21, 1994.
Valery Tsepkalo in 1997-2002 was the ambassador of Belarus in Washington, and also worked as the first deputy head of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry. From October 2005 to March 2017, he was the director of the Belarus High Technologies Park.
In May 2020, Tsepkalo put forward his candidacy for the presidential elections in the republic. And in August he became a defendant in a criminal case under the article on accepting a bribe on an especially large scale. On the territory of Russia, Tsepkalo is also wanted.
