The presidential council called “feasible” the idea of annexing Donbass to Russia

The other day, RT editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan proposed to include the Donetsk and Lugansk regions of Ukraine in Russia. The journalist expressed confidence that the residents of the unrecognized republics themselves want this.

Shortly thereafter, the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov said that in the near future the authorities did not plan to consider the issue of joining Donbass. Peskov added that Simonyan’s position does not coincide with the official Kremlin.

However, Bogdan Bezpalko, a member of the Council for Interethnic Relations under the President of Russia, believes that the idea of including the DPR and LPR in Russia is “feasible.” According to him, any people has the right to determine the belonging of themselves and their lands to this or that state.

Bezpalko recalled that history knows many examples of how the population of the disputed territories sought to join a particular country through a referendum or other forms of popular will. Among them, the expert highlighted the long-term disputes about the Falkland Islands between Great Britain and Argentina, as well as about Gibraltar, whose status is disputed by Spain and the same Great Britain.

Bogdan Bezpalko expressed confidence that the residents of Donbass are ready for a plebiscite, at which they will declare their desire to become part of Russia to the whole world. He believes that Moscow should not remain indifferent to their wishes and hopes that it will fully integrate the DPR and LPR into the state.
