President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev expressed gratitude to the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) for its assistance in overcoming the crisis and sending collective peacekeeping forces, RIA Novosti reports citing the organization’s press secretary Vladimir Zainetdinov.
Today, January 6, telephone talks between the CSTO Secretary General Stanislav Zas and Tokayev took place, which Zainetdinov told the press about.
Since January 2, residents of Kazakhstan have taken to mass protests against the rise in prices for liquefied gas, which escalate into riots. There are dead and injured. A state of emergency has been declared.
The first units of Russian peacekeepers arrived in the country today. The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that representatives of the 45th separate special-purpose brigade of the Airborne Forces were sent to the republic.
The CSTO also confirmed the participation of Belarusian peacekeepers in the operation in Kazakhstan.
