The President of Finland said that the requirements of the Russian Federation to NATO are of concern to Europe

Moscow’s demands on the United States and the North Atlantic Alliance for security guarantees cause concern in Europe and run counter to the established order there. This is reported by TASS with reference to the President of Finland Sauli Niinistö.

He believes that there is no place for “spheres of interest” in the 2020s. The Finnish leader stressed that the sovereign equality of all countries is a basic principle that everyone should respect.

Niinistö declared that it was impossible to create a sustainable future with the possibility of the threat of the use of military force or other types of violence. He continued that on the basis of this, a response to Russia’s demands was followed by a proposal for dialogue.

The Finnish President stressed that many Europeans are concerned about this situation. According to the politician, they ask “why they are being discussed, but they are not involved in this discussion.”

“Although the demands were made by the US and NATO, in such a situation Europe cannot just listen,” Niinistö said.

He added that the sovereignty of Sweden and Finland has been questioned by politicians outside the EU. This makes the European Union an involved party, the president said. For this reason, he should not only be a “technical coordinator of sanctions,” the Finnish leader said.

Russia and the United States will hold talks in Geneva on January 10 to discuss security guarantees. On January 12, a meeting of the Russia-NATO Council will take place, and on January 13 – negotiations between representatives of the Russian Federation and the OSCE.

Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russia’s proposals on security guarantees are aimed at creating and legalizing a new system of agreements based on the principle of abandoning attempts to achieve military superiority.
