The scandal around Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is gaining momentum. The collection of signatures in support of his impeachment has begun among deputies of the Verkhovna Rada.
Ilya Kiva, a deputy from the Opposition Platform – For Life faction, announced on his Facebook page about the start of the campaign against the incumbent president. He called the incident a historical moment.
The party decided to initiate impeachment of Zelensky after blocking three popular TV channels 112 Ukraine, ZIK and NewsOne. In early February this year, the head of the country put into effect the decision of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (NSDC) to revoke their licenses.
In response, members of the faction accused the president of violating democratic norms and trying to establish a dictatorship in the country. According to them, Zelensky decided to close the TV channels due to the fact that they criticized his activities, in particular, the increase in gas tariffs and the forced Ukrainization of the population.
The spokesman for the head of state, Yulia Mendel, explained that the decision to close the opposition channels was collegial and received a positive response from society. She called the impeachment of Volodymyr Zelenskyy “a propaganda initiative” and an attempt to split the people.
Earlier, political scientist Denis Denisov analyzed the ratings of the Ukrainian leader. He drew attention to the fact that the number of citizens supporting Vladimir Zelensky has recently dropped. Despite this, he continues to be the most popular politician in the country.
