The press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov said that the Kremlin welcomed the landing of the American Perseverance research vehicle on Mars, RIA Novosti writes.
Peskov called such achievements “the heritage of mankind”. At the same time, he recalled that the Russian Federation has its own “ambitious program for space exploration,” and the competition of countries in this area, in his words, is a driver of development.
“I repeat once again: any success, of course, is worthy to be welcomed, but, of course, our country has its own ambitious space exploration program. Let’s not forget about it, too, ”the agency quotes the words of a Kremlin spokesman.
The US rover Perseverance successfully landed in the Mars crater Jezero last night. Previously, thanks to satellite data, scientists discovered in this crater traces of a river delta that once flowed into a large lake. Experts believe that traces of life could have survived there.
The American apparatus will operate on Mars for 687 days: looking for signs of ancient microbial life, studying the geology and climate of the Red Planet, collecting samples of rocks and sediments, which will then be delivered to Earth.
Earlier, US President Joe Biden and Roscosmos congratulated NASA on the successful landing of the rover.
