Washington will complete its combat mission in Iraq by the end of 2021. This information was confirmed by US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin at a meeting with the head of the Iraqi defense department, Juma Inad. This was reported by Pentagon spokesman John Kirby, RIA Novosti reports.
He noted that the US military remains in Iraq at the invitation of the government of the republic to support its security forces. Austin stressed that Washington will fulfill its commitments in July 2021. These include those that oblige the US military to leave Iraqi territory by the end of this year.
Kirby said the ministers discussed the next phase of the United States military mission in Iraq. It will be based on consulting, assistance and exchange of intelligence with the republic’s military personnel as part of a campaign to combat Islamic State militants *.
It is noted that Austin again condemned the attempted assassination of Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kazimi. The head of the American department expressed the hope that the creation of the new government of the Middle East state will proceed in a peaceful manner.
Austin said earlier that Iran is the main threat to the Middle East.
