The head of the board of NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine, Andriy Kobolev, said that stopping the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is a “matter of life and death” for Ukrainians.
On Facebook, he wrote that the completion of the Russian project would allegedly make Ukraine “defenseless” against Russia.
So, in his opinion, now, while the transit of gas to European countries passes through the territory of the country, the Ukrainian GTS is allegedly a “part of the defense system” of the state. However, if there is an opportunity to change the geography of gas supplies to the EU, Ukraine’s position will change, Kobolev said.
The Nord Stream 2 project envisages the laying of two lines of a gas pipeline from the Russian coast through the Baltic Sea to Germany. The United States actively opposes the construction of the pipeline, promoting its liquefied natural gas to Europe. Washington periodically imposes sanctions against the project.
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called the latest US sanctions on Nord Stream 2 hostile. She noted that SP-2 is a commercial project that will strengthen the energy security of Europe and will facilitate the transition to low-emission energy.
