The golden ratio. What are the ideal facial proportions?

Arguments about which person can be considered ideal have been going on for a long time. Researchers have also tried to calculate the optimal proportions that will make it possible to call a person beautiful without any questions.

“Mask of the Golden Section”

In 2009, American scientists conducted a series of experiments in which men were asked to calculate the ideal proportions of a woman’s face – they looked at different photos and paintings and expressed their opinions. According to the results of such a study, it turned out that men like it when the distance from the line of the eyes to the line of the mouth does not exceed 36% of the entire length of the face. The ideal option between the eyes was also calculated: from pupil to pupil there should be about 46% of the total width of the face.

When determining the optimal proportions of the face, scientists even created the term “mask of the golden ratio”. Its proportions are 1: 1.618. And since the appearance of such numbers, many ladies began to strive to adjust their data to these standards. At the same time, the discoverer of such a mask is considered Pythagoraswho first calculated the parameters of beauty.

The results of the analysis of photographs of celebrities who are recognized as true beauties show that their proportions are not always not ideal. And experts pay attention to the fact that when assessing the appearance, many pay more attention to the plumpness of the lips and the size of the eyes, rather than to the parameters of the golden ratio. “Each person is beautiful in his own way, and each has his own view of beauty. For some, one person is beautiful, for others not very. This is all subjective, but in cosmetology and plastic surgery there are certain benchmarks that we rely on to determine the border of the normal position and normal proportions of the face, ”notes plastic surgeon Danila Lupin

A look at the face through the eyes of a surgeon

According to Danila Lupin, surgeons divide the face into several zones:

  • upper third;
  • middle third;
  • lower third.

“The upper and middle zones are approximately the same, and if some zones become larger or smaller, the task of a specialist is to harmonize everything. As for the eyes, forehead, eyebrows and chin, there are also certain aesthetic lines, tension lines and vector lines, which we also focus on, but these are subtleties, ”explains Lupin.

Ricketts line

In their work, plastic surgeons often rely on proportions along the Ricketts Line – this is the straight line connecting the tip of the nose and the chin. With the correct proportions, it should extend 4 mm from the upper lip and 2 mm from the lower lip.

“If the edge of the lower lip touches this line, then this indicates that there is not enough chin volume, or the lower lip is very large. But if the girl did nothing with her lips, it means a small chin. We add volume to the chin, harmonize the Ricketts line, thus harmonizing the face. Plus, by stretching the chin, we extend the line of the oval of the lower jaw, making the oval of the face clearer and more correct, ”says Danila Lupin.

How is the face harmonized?

You can make your face harmonious by taking into account a number of rules. So, for example, harmonization can go both in volume and along tension lines. “Volumetric harmonization is when we add volume in some parts and remove it somewhere else. For example, there may be a large nose, but at the same time small beautiful eyes and small, but beautiful lips of the correct shape. But at first glance, the nose sets off the focus of attention, and the picture is blurred, ”says the surgeon.

A person who looks at such a face does not pay attention to beautiful eyes, lips, chin, oval line, he only looks at the “potato” nose, notes the plastic surgeon. If people apply for facial beautification and harmonization, then they can work with the nose, for example, reduce it with rhinoplasty, make it more delicate and more beautiful. But not small and doll-like, as it will also look bad, but to make it normal, straight, with “ideal” proportions.

By working along the lines of tension, for example, you can make the chin-cervical angle clearer and tighter. It happens that with age, the platysma (neck muscle) relaxes harder, the neck line is smoothed, and the chin-cervical angle can also be smoothed. Accordingly, the face no longer has such a clear outline. “If we return the chin-cervical angle to its place, create tension in one way or another, then we also harmonize the face,” notes the plastic surgeon.

“But I think that everything is subjective, and you can only harmonize outstanding facial features. Somewhere to emphasize lips, somewhere nose, chin, etc. and thus make ideal facial features for each person separately, ”the doctor sums up.
