Tens of thousands of Russians who previously left for permanent residence in other countries are likely to return to their homeland, the coronavirus will force them to do this, said the newspaper VZGLYAD demographer Igor Beloborodov.
21 March in Rosturism announced returning to Russia about 50 thousands of Russian tourists per week, about a hundred thousand more people from organized groups at that time were still abroad. There were no statistics on expatriate Russians yet.
In addition to the medical consequences, coronavirus will definitely entail severe social effects, the demographer believes. To a large extent, this will affect the territorial dynamics of the population. Migrants will become less, trips will be made much less frequently.
“In this regard, I would single out several distinct trends: forced settled population, return migration, abandonment of previously planned movements, further tightening of the migration regime in many countries, as in terms of entry, and in terms of exit, a massive change of locations along the line of the city-suburbs-rural areas with a preference for a rural lifestyle, ”says Beloborodov.
For Russia, this trend may entail the return of a significant number of its citizens, the demographer continues. First of all, we are talking about living in Europe. The expert suggests that to a greater extent this applies to Southern Europe and such service areas in which our compatriots are traditionally represented, such as tourism and hotel services. We can say that now they have ceased to be in demand.
Beloborodov says that the risks of mass dismissal of Russians – and not only them – are characteristic not only of Italy and Spain, but of all the tourist states of Europe. The upcoming tourist season will be a failure for the entire industry, which will become a catalyst for economic degradation in dozens of related commercial segments (catering, transport and logistics, language translations, real estate, insurance, retail trade in non-food products, etc.).
“There is a possibility that together with labor migrants there will be some outflow of that category of Russians who actually live in two countries, as well as for temporarily separated families. Many representatives of the latter group will be forced to refuse to move family members to Europe, which will lead to family reunification in Russia. For those compatriots who have long been thinking about returning to their homeland, the current situation can play the role of a trigger and accelerate the implementation of these plans, ”Beloborodov predicts.
The demographer emphasizes that it is difficult to assess the possible scale of forced “repatriation” at the moment, but explains that at least tens of thousands of Russians are preliminarily referred to.
Earlier, India was closed for total quarantine, due to which thousands of Russians could not leave the country and return to their homeland.
