The expert called Finland’s applications for NATO membership rhetoric

Ivan Timofeev, Program Director of the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC), said that the statements of the Finnish authorities about possible joining the North Atlantic Alliance should not be taken seriously. RIA Novosti reports.

Earlier, Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin and President Sauli Niinistö announced that Finland could still apply to join NATO.

Timofeev noted that the words of Finnish politicians are just statements. At the same time, he stressed that the discussion within Finland about joining the alliance has been going on for a long time. The expert noted that it began even before the start of the crisis in Ukraine.

The specialist said that in Finland the idea of joining NATO is supported by a minority. This is due to the fact that the country is able to solve its problems of security and cooperation with Western countries on its own, the source said.

Timofeev clarified that membership in the military-political bloc will allow this state to become “a full-fledged part of the security community,” but it will spoil relations with the Russian Federation and only aggravate the security issue.

Earlier, Sauli Niinistö said that Moscow’s demands on the United States and the North Atlantic Alliance for security guarantees cause concern in Europe and contradict the order formed there.
