Viktor Maleev, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Advisor to the Director for Research of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, expressed the opinion that the coronavirus epidemic in the Russian Federation could end by August, since many will already have immunity, RIA Novosti writes.
The epidemiologist clarified that due to the seasonality of the virus, the number of cases of coronavirus is likely to decrease to only hundreds or even units. He stressed that such indicators do not play a big role on a national scale.
“Thus, the epidemic in Russia may end by August, since many will have immunity, and, given the seasonality of the virus and a decrease in the incidence, the epidemic potential of the coronavirus will stop in the summer,” Maleev added.
Meanwhile, he said that some rise in the incidence is possible by the fall, as people will begin to return from vacations and will be in contact with each other more often.
Earlier, the press secretary of the Russian president Dmitry Peskov said that the threat of a third wave of coronavirus in the country remains. At the same time, he noted that the statistics of morbidity in the Russian Federation gives rise to “cautious optimism.”
