The foreign ministers of the EU countries have decided to introduce the fifth package of European sanctions against Belarus in connection with the migration crisis at the Polish borders.
“We have agreed to adopt a new package of sanctions, the fifth in a row, which will take effect in the coming days. The Council of Europe decided to expand the criteria by which sanctions can be imposed, and now such a concept as the instrumentalization of migrants has been added – this is what the Lukashenka regime is accused of, ”
– said the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign and Security Policy Joseph Borrell at a press conference following a meeting of the EU Council.
Now the EU can impose sanctions on both individuals and legal entities suspected of “instrumentalizing migrants”.
The new sanctions will affect, first of all, the Belarusian airline Belavia: from now on it is prohibited from leasing planes from European companies. The fact is that more than half of all aircraft of the Belarusian airline are rented in Europe. Now in Brussels it has been decided that if you take these leased planes, then twice as few migrants will get to the territory of Belarus.
New sanctions will also affect tour operators, as well as persons from the government of Belarus.
Meanwhile, since November 14, citizens of Syria, Yemen, Iraq and Afghanistan have not been accepted on Belavia’s flights from Dubai.
Belavia Airlines emphasizes that it has never facilitated the transportation of illegal migrants to the Republic of Belarus. In connection with the increased attention to this topic on the part of some media, the airline has strengthened control on all its flights for the impeccable fulfillment of all visa requirements of the Republic of Belarus and foreign countries, migration legislation “,
– said in a statement published on the official website of the company.
In Belarus, they are ready to respond to the next sanctions pressure from Europe, since the introduction of the next package of sanctions is unacceptable, noted the head of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry. Vladimir Makei…
The President of Belarus also touched upon the topic of European sanctions Alexander Lukashenko during a meeting with a working group to finalize the draft Constitution.
The head of state asked for a quick and effective response to the events taking place at the border. And he recalled that the Poles accused Minsk of not providing humanitarian aid to refugees. Although such accusations sound more than strange, the president noted, if we recall that he himself instructed to organize the delivery and distribution of humanitarian aid.
“I’ve been dealing with this issue all weekend. And all the issues that I have entrusted have been resolved. We feed both children and pregnant women. And we deliver firewood, everything they need.
It is clear that the situation on the state border is heating up, and it is clear with what aim. We understand this very well. It is not for nothing that they say: “Lukashenka is to blame,” followed by “Putin is to blame,” “Belarus is to blame,” followed by “Russia is to blame.” And we will respond to the sanctions ”,
– stated the president.
