The EU promises Ukraine money for the war, but will not discuss Nord Stream 2 with Kiev

In Kiev, Borrell’s visit was regarded as an unconditional change

Late on Tuesday evening, January 4, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs arrived in Ukraine Joseph Borrell

On Wednesday, he went to the Luhansk region, to the contact line in the JFO zone in Donbass, according to him, to get acquainted with the situation in the conflict zone on the spot.

In Kiev, during Borrell’s trip to Donbass, they immediately saw another change – the victory of Ukrainian diplomacy.

“This visit is a sign of the unity of Ukraine and the EU against the background of the“ threats to Russia ”and the strength of our diplomacy for the sake of peace, security and justice in Europe,”

stated Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba, who accompanied the European guest on a trip to Donbass.

Along the way, the parties discussed the “containment of Russia”, which, according to the Ukrainian minister, is possible only through the introduction of new anti-Russian sanctions – even tougher than the previous ones, as well as possible humanitarian projects in Donbass and issues “Respect for the territorial integrity of Ukraine”

Borrell, for his part, promised to continue to help Ukraine financially, in particular, to further allocate funds to strengthen the Ukrainian defense and recalled that the European Union has already provided, starting in 2014, “An unprecedented amount of aid17 billion euros.

“The EU is ready to continue to provide other types of financial support, such as, for example, the already approved package of assistance of 31 million euros to strengthen the armed forces of Ukraine, in particular, their capabilities in the field of cyber defense,”

– said the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell during a joint briefing with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba in the JFO zone.

According to Borrell, the main purpose of his visit is to reduce the tension on the Ukrainian borders, and for this the European Union will continue to do “Firm statements regarding support for Ukraine”, in particular that “Any military aggression against Ukraine will have large-scale consequences and a huge cost”

However, on the eve of the briefing, the European representative announced to reporters that the issue of the Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 would not be discussed with the Ukrainian side during his visit, since this issue does not relate to the security sphere of Ukraine.

“The purpose of my visit is to focus on the political situation and security in Ukraine. As for Nord Stream 2, the solution to this issue is now in the hands of the German regulator, “

Borrell said in an interview with the Polish Press Agency on the eve of his visit to Ukraine.
