Yerevan demands compensation for damage incurred during 44-day war
On Thursday, October 14, the International Court of Justice of the United Nations began public hearings in the case of Armenia on the adoption of provisional measures on the application of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination – the case “Armenia v. Azerbaijan”.
Public hearings are taking place in The Hague at the Peace Palace and will last for two days.
Armenia filed a lawsuit against Azerbaijan in the International Court of Justice on September 16, in which it accuses Baku of racial discrimination for decades, which caused the massacres of Armenians, torture and other crimes.
Armenia’s lawsuit in the Hague court read out by the representative of Armenia Yeghishe Kirakosyan, noting that even almost a year after the signing of the trilateral agreement of November 9, 2020 following the results of the 44-day war, Azerbaijan continues the cruel treatment of prisoners who are still under the jurisdiction of Baku. In addition, a policy of destroying everything Armenian, including historical and cultural monuments, is being pursued in the territory that has come under the control of Azerbaijan, the representative of Armenia emphasized.
“The purpose of the lawsuit is to prevent the expansion of the vicious circle of hatred and aggression against ethnic Armenians, to protect their rights from irreversible damage. Hatred of the Armenians – the original population of the region – is promoted by the leadership of Azerbaijan almost on an everyday level. This propaganda affects almost the entire society of this country, and for several generations they have been brought up on hatred and fear of everything Armenian. According to this policy, any traces of the presence of Armenians in the territory controlled by Baku must either be destroyed or distorted and falsified, “
– said Kirakosyan.
He drew attention to the fact that the perpetrators of all these crimes receive great support from the Azerbaijani authorities, they are glorified in every possible way and are treated like heroes. The representative of Armenia also reminded of the events of a century ago, which shocked not only the region, but the whole world with their cruelty, and warned that those events could be repeated. Therefore, today there is an urgent need to take measures to protect the rights of Armenia and Armenians, Kirakosyan noted.
“Armenia asks to recognize Azerbaijan guilty of violating the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, to prevent further damage and compensate for the damage already caused,”
– the lawsuit says.
Azerbaijan filed a counterclaim on September 24, accusing Armenia of racial discrimination against Azerbaijanis, also demanding compensation for damage and temporary interim measures.
Azerbaijan’s claim will be considered on October 18-19.
Let us recall that temporary interim measures are introduced so that the situation does not worsen during the consideration of the claim in court.
