The bill on the extension of the term of service of army generals adopted in the first reading

On October 21, the State Duma adopted in the first reading a bill that allows the president to increase the age limit for military service for a marshal, army general and fleet admiral by decision of the country’s president, TASS reports.

The explanatory note to the document states that “sometimes it becomes necessary to renew the contract with the most experienced and highly qualified military personnel … and upon reaching the specified age.”

The head of the State Duma Defense Committee Andrei Kartapolov expressed confidence that the changes will have a positive effect on ensuring the country’s defense and state security.

Recall that the bill on the extension of the service of senior officers, President Vladimir Putin submitted to the State Duma in July this year. It follows from the document that a new contract with them can be concluded before reaching the age of 70 years. Now the age limit for military service for them is 65 years.

Note that the ranks of marshals are not currently held by serving officers. In the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation there are five senior officers who, possibly, can serve indefinitely. Read more about this in the material
