Chen Haoyang, a senior researcher at the Taihe think tank, said that Beijing is currently not ready to mediate in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
He claims that China has always been Russia’s “strategic partner”. But China also maintained good relations with Ukraine, Chen Haoyang said, RIA Novosti writes.
According to him, the conflict on the territory of Ukraine, which flared up after the introduction of Russian troops, was provoked by the West. It can be resolved through negotiations between the parties.
“We generally believe that this Russian-Ukrainian conflict is in fact the result of ongoing fueling the fire from the US and the West, as well as the result of NATO expansion to the East,” he said.
At the same time, Chen Haoyang notes, China believes that now is not the best time for direct intervention. But once conditions are ripe, he has no doubt that China will be ready to “make its contribution to the cause of peace.”
