The agreement on the extension of the START Treaty will be valid until February 5, 2026

The agreement on the extension of the START Treaty will enter into force from the date of the last of the notes exchanged between the Russian Federation and the United States, the agreement will be valid until February 5, 2026, RIA Novosti reports.

“In accordance with the decree of the President of the Russian Federation, the Russian Foreign Ministry held negotiations with the American side to develop an agreement on the extension of the agreement signed on April 8, 2010. The agreement was formalized in the form of an exchange of notes, such an exchange took place yesterday, ”the agency quotes the words of Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov.

We will remind, the agreement on the extension of the agreement was concluded between the countries on the eve of January 26.

The ratification of the agreement was supported by the State Duma of the Russian Federation. The deputies considered this issue at a meeting held on January 27.

The START-3 Treaty (START) between Russia and the United States was signed in Prague on April 8, 2010 and entered into force on February 5, 2011. The document was valid for 10 years, but paragraph 2 of Article XIV of the treaty provides for the possibility of extending it for up to five years if Russia and the United States make such a decision.

Today START-3 is the only effective arms limitation treaty between the Russian Federation and the United States. If it had not been extended, there would have been no agreements in the world that would limit the arsenals of the major nuclear powers.
