Flight tests of the first prototype of the new Russian attack unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) “Sirius” will begin in 2022, RIA Novosti reports, citing a source in the military-industrial complex.
“Work on the creation of the first prototype of the Sirius strike drone is scheduled to be completed in 2022. In the same year, the drone will perform its first flight and the program of its flight tests will begin, ”the source said.
The Sirius reconnaissance and strike UAV is being developed by the Kronstadt company. A full-size mock-up of the device with the alleged weapons was shown last summer at the Army-2020 exhibition.
According to the source, the new strike UAV weighing 2 tons will receive a more powerful armament complex than that of the “Pacer” (also known as “Orion”).
The total mass of the Sirius’ payload will reach 300 kg. The device will be able to carry guided air-to-surface missiles weighing up to 100 kg, as well as unguided and corrected air bombs weighing from 50 to 250 kg.
According to data previously published by the Kronstadt company, the Sirius UAV belongs to the class of medium-altitude unmanned aerial vehicles of long duration. The device will receive a take-off weight of up to 2 tons, its wingspan will be up to 23 meters, the flight duration should reach 20 hours. The maximum flight altitude of the drone is declared at 7000 meters, the cruising speed of the device will be 180 kilometers per hour. Sirius will be powered by two turboprop engines.
The UAV “Inokhodets” was also developed by the “Kronstadt” company. Its take-off weight is 1000 kilograms, the mass of the combat load is up to 200 kilograms. The device has one piston engine, the cruising speed is 120 kilometers per hour and can be in the air for up to 24 hours. The “pacer” drones were used by the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation to strike at terrorist targets in Syria.
On April 16, it became known that the Kronstadt company began construction in Dubna of the first specialized plant in Russia for the serial production of shock UAVs. The launch of production is scheduled for November 2021.
