The meeting ended with a score of 6: 3, 6: 3 in favor of the 39-year-old American. In the semifinals, Williams will play with the third racket of the world, Japanese Naomi Osaka.
Williams has won the Australian Open seven times, three at Roland Garros, seven at Wimbledon, and six at the US Open. Last year she lost to Belarusian tennis player Victoria Azarenka in the US Open semifinals.
Halep won the French Open in 2018 and Wimbledon in 2019. The best result of an athlete at the Australian Open is reaching the final (2018).
The Australian Open will end on February 21, and the current champion is the American Sofia Kenin.
Earlier, Russian Aslan Karatsev beat Grigor Dimitrov from Bulgaria in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.
